Installation Guide for Windows XP EmbeddedWhen you install Windows XP Embedded, you can install:
Windows Embedded Studio, a set of development tools, which you use to customize the Windows XP operating system (OS) according to the requirements of your embedded system hardware and software. You can also use the tools to define functionality of the OS and deploy your run-time image to your device.
The development tools installation includes:
Component Designer, a tool used to author components
Target Designer, a tool for authoring configurations and building embedded operating system run-time images
Component Database Manager, a tool used to manage the component database
A collection of utilities and command-line tools.
Product documentation
A component database that contains definitions of the Windows XP binary files in the form of components that you can include in a configuration. The database must be installed either on the development system or on a server so multiple users can access it.
The database installation includes:
The component database containing metadata about the operating system in the form of components
Repositories containing the files that are referenced by the components
A database engine, which enables the development tools to access the component database.

System RequirementsBefore you install Windows XP Embedded, make certain your development system meets the requirements shown in the following table.

Note Before you install Windows XP Embedded, consider how you expect to use the tools. If you plan to deploy your run-time image on your development system for testing purposes, you need a free logical disk on your development system.
Protect your development system during the installation process by performing the following steps before you install Windows XP Embedded:
Back up important data and applications stored on your computer.
Disable or uninstall antivirus applications that are running.
Have your copy of the Windows XP Embedded installation media and product identification key.
